Quilting can be a very rewarding hobby. Quilts can be passed on from one generation to another. The look in the eyes, of family members or friends, as they light up when they receive a quilt as a gift is a priceless memory. The idea that someone cared enough about them to spend the time, effort and money to make them something as opposed to just buying them a gift is very special.
When creating a family heirloom for the ages, it is important to use good quality fabric so that it will last for many years. There are several factors that figure into the quality of fabric. Thread count, just as in bed linens, is the primary difference between an inexpensive fabric and a good quality fabric. If you can hold the fabric up to the light and almost see thru it, it’s not good quality fabric and will not stand the test of time. It will also not sew well. The fewer the thread count the harder it is to get the seams to look good, poor quality fabric will pucker. Poor quality fabric and thread will not hold up well to repeated washing and normal wear and tear.
